The Geotropic Response in Asterina
نویسنده
چکیده
Upon a surface inclined at angle alpha Asterina gibbosa orients upward during negatively geotropic creeping until the average angle (theta) of the path is such that Delta sin theta/Delta sin alpha = const. This is true also in positively geotropic movement. The direction of orientation may be temporarily reversed by mechanical disturbance. The variation of theta is greater at low slopes. Tests with directed impressed pulls, due to an attached cork float, show that the pull upon the tube feet is of primary consequence for the determination of theta. When the component of gravitational pull in the direction of movement reaches a fraction of the total pull which is proportional to the gravitational vector parallel to the surface, the laterally acting component is ineffective. On this basis, it follows that Delta sin theta/Delta sin alpha = const.

The Effect of Light on the Geotropic Responses of Phycomyces Sporangiophores
The geotropic responses of Phycomyces sporangiophores were studied under varying intensities of illumination, using a low speed centrifuge and a fixed beam of blue light. This light has a strongly inhibitory effect on the transient geotropic response, reducing it to 36 per cent of its magnitude in darkness. The inhibition does not vary systematically with light intensity over a range of 400-fol...
متن کاملGeotropic Response of Coleoptiles under Anaerobic Conditions ' Malcolm B . Wilkins
It has been reported recently that coleoptiles of Zea mays develop a geotropic response under anaerobic conditions (2). The geotropic response of a coleoptile arises from the differential growth of the upper and lower halves of the organ. At least 3 independent investigations have shown that in Avena sativa coleoptiles growth is totally arrested in the absence of 02 (1,6, 9). It is therefore di...

متن کاملRelation of Phytochrome-enhanced Geotropic Sensitivity to Ethylene Production.
Brief exposure of etiolated pea (Pisum sativum cv. Alaska) seedlings to red light enhances subsequent development of geotropic curvature of the stem. Both this response and inhibition of ethylene production by red light become maximal 8 hours after illumination. Very low concentrations of applied ethylene inhibit development of geotropic curvature, whereas hypobaric treatment enhances geotropic...
متن کاملStarfish, Asterias amurensis and Asterina pectinifera, as potential sources of Th1 immunity-stimulating adjuvants.
Saponin is the generic name of steroid or triterpene glycosides, and the capacities of some saponins to stimulate both Th1 immune response and production of cytotoxic T cells are useful as vaccine components against intracellular pathogens. Because saponins have been found commonly in starfish, we assessed the potential of starfish, Asterias amurensis and Asterina pectinifera, as adjuvant sourc...
